Trade deadline

What is the status of the trade deadline? I thought it was moved 1 week due to the season being extended to 18 weeks but it looks like it runs right up to the final week of our regular season. |

One thing to say about this...
The NFL didn't delay the beginning of the preseason by 1 week, they eliminated the last week of the preseason. We have always revealed our franchise declarations after week 1 of the preseason. There were even a few seasons where some teams played their first preseason game until after our declarations were made. That being said, I still have no problem with moving our declaration date back one week. |

What about an increase for repeat offenders
Maybe have the penalty go up 5MB for each offense after the first. If we really want to be savage, we could have the penalty double for repeat offenses (5, 10, 20, 40, 80).
If we want to go the wheel of death route, we could appeal to the old school gamers in the league and use a D20 of Death since there are 20 spots on each roster.

Number of beds is very important
We've seen plenty of listings over the years that said "sleeps 12," but only has 6 beds. Number of beds is probably more important than number of bedrooms. If there are enough large couches we don't necessarily need a bed for each person.
The other main requirements that I've always looked for are a room big enough to draft in and enough parking for all the cars that will be there. |

You all lost to the guy who voluntarily wore a Mark Sanchez jersey for the entire draft.
Fortunately, we're a league full of independent personalities and not a bunch of copy cats. The last thing we need is multiple Sanchez jerseys showing up at next year's draft. |

The championship isn't the only match up in limbo
We need something that gives fair closure to all match ups.
I like the idea of using week 18 stats if the game doesn't get resumed. Not sure what to do if the game is resumed but starters are benched. Letting owners switch out starters from week 17 makes sense. Again, I'm open to any fair suggestions. |

Honestly, I don't know if I like that any better
Unfortunately, it's basically an all-around shitty situation. The two of you made a trade based on the information that was available. It turns out that not all pertinent information was available at the time of the trade. Then after a game was played, everything changed. It definitely sucks for Zach, but is it fair to his opponent and other teams battling for playoff position with him to just undo everything? I'm not sure if there is an easy answer to this. But mostly, as we head into uncharted territory (once again) I thinks it's something that deserves league discussion in case a situation like this comes up again. |

Injuries are a part of football (and fantasy)
It sucks when you trade for a player and he immediately gets hurt. And I completely understand why both sides would want to trade back after an immediate injury happens. But I'm not completely sure how I feel about letting this kind of trade reversal happen. At the very least, this reversal can't happen until after Week 4 is over because Zach started Tua. |

People don't drop their coach for a position player
Having 1 punter is an interesting idea. I've been keeping my eye on coaches for many years now. Across all the leagues on this sit that uses a coach i don't know if I've ever seen a team drop their coach for an extra position player for more than a week. I know I did it once and it just didn't "feel right."
Punters would be like anti-coaches. You'd want the ones from bad teams. Cameron Johnston (the Texans punter) would have scored at least 1 point every week under Jeremy's proposed system last season. |

Great idea Billy

I also think the Rams will win, but won't be at all shocked if they don't.
I'm not really a betting person, but I heard some interesting advice for betting on the Super Bowl. If you want to bet on a team to win, you're better off betting on that team's QB to win the MVP. The MVP almost always goes to the winning QB and the payout for that bet is better than the payout for the team winning the game.
As for something new - I have made the trip up to New Hope, PA twice in the past few weeks to play with the house band at a bar up there. They have an all-star band of local musicians who do a night of classic covers every Wednesday. The band is phenomenal and they seem to really like what I add to their set. Here's a link to a very psychedelic version of 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover that I played on last week.

The price goes down about $5 per night for everyone. $73.33 per night.

I can't seem to get it to do anything (that could just be me). Every time I try to start a new league, it puts the league into 2019. The only league I could try to start a draft in was the one I set up 2 years ago, but I can't get the draft board to come up. |

An interesting idea.

Having the final playoff push/seeding based on competing against the whole league. Plus it puts the week 14 byes in the regular season and out of the playoffs. At the very least, it's worth trying to see how well it actually plays out - but it could be the answer we're looking for. |

For anyone interested in paying now

Unfortunately, I don't have Venmo. I do have a Paypal account. you can send funds to misterpid@yahoo.com. Just make sure to mark that you're sending to a friend to avoid extra fees. If you want to pay a different way, you can either email me at that same address or send me a post-it here and we can work something out. Or, you can wait until draft weekend and pay me in person. |

Here's how it looks for people who don't have to fly out for the draft.
Me - 2 nights Kent - nights Keith - 4 nights Zach - 3 nights Billy - 4 nights Jeremy - 3 nights Tommy - 2 nights Sean - 3 nights Joe - 4 nights
That's total of 28 nights. $2,200 divided by 28 nights is $78.57 per night.
2 nights = $157.14 3 nights = $235.71 4 nights = $314.28 |

A little over a month away
Draft weekend is quickly approaching, so it's time for everyone to figure out what days they'll be spending at the draft house. Once we know how many days we'll each be there, we can figure out how much it'll cost us each per night. The overall cost for the house is $2,200 (including all fees and taxes). As is customary, those who have to fly to get there don't have to pay.
I'll be staying Friday and Saturday nights.
As a reference, here's the link to the house.

Mask mandate started again in DC at 5 AM yesterday
I'll get off work at 7 or 8 Friday morning and I work the front desk of a hotel. So isolation isn't possible. But I will be masking for at least as long as the mandate holds. Getting a test during the week before heading down shouldn't be an issue. |

I haven't ruled out the possibility of getting there yet
The way it looks, my schedule will have me working overnight shifts Sunday through Thursday. If that holds up (and it could change), I could potentially drive down on Friday after getting some sleep. That should get me to Blowing Rock around 9 or 10 PM. I don't know if that would allow us to get the draft started that night. We would have to do the rest (or all) of the draft on Saturday. As long as I get 6 hours of sleep hit the road by 9 AM on Sunday, I should be fine.
Of course, plenty of things could happen between now and draft weekend. But this seems like the most realistic way of me actually getting there. |

Some good news and some not-so-good news
The good news is that after 14 months, I'm finally back to work at the hotel. I don't have the same position that I had before (at least for now), but at the moment I'm not overly concerned about that.
The not-so-good news is that with being back to work, I don't know if I'll be able to attend the draft. It's too early to give a definite answer either way, but for now it's leaning towards me not being there in person. |

Well, if it's time to ask about this again...
Then it's time to give this reply again.
Is our QB system broken? In what ways will the changes being suggested fix/improve our system?
We already have a system where the few elite QBs have a good separation from the rest. Will any changes make this separation even wider? If so, I don't think that would be good for the league.
As for 2 QBs/superflex, I think that system makes QB injuries much worse for teams - especially in a league with a 10 man bench where QB hoarding is a real possibility. |

I don't have any issue with the Tommy just assuming Scott's position. But I do really like the idea of having to work your way up through the system. He'll have to prove that he's worthy of rising out of Hel.
What I think may be the bigger issue is how will Tommy's ranking be calculated at the end of this season? He will only have one season's worth of stats to compare with everyone else's two seasons when calculating next season's rankings. That would most likely place him in Hel for next season.
It kind of feels like starting off in Hel for a season or two might be part of the initiation into the league moving forward. Any new owner would have to prove, through performance, that he doesn't belong there. I don't really see this as being punitive, it's more of just starting with a blank slate. |

Will having a new owner affect the weighted divisions?
Will the new owner take Scott's place in Midgard or will this person have to start at the bottom of Hel? Will the new owner only have one year's worth of stats when calculating next year's divisions? |

My input
I say this every year - there are two main things I look for in a draft house.
1) Number of beds 2) A space for having the draft
All of the places look great, however from what I see a few might have some issues.
Chapel Hill only has 4 beds. Charlotte an Beech Mountain each only have 7 beds.
Kerr Lake doesn't look like it has a good space for drafting. Lake Tillery #2 looks amazing, but it also seems to be lacking a good space for the draft.
My ranking of the rest would be
Blowing Rock Lake Gaston Lake Tillery #1 Roaring Gap

As for kickers,
If they can only get negative points, why start one? Keep all the other rules for kickers as suggested, but make a 50+ yard FG worth 10 points (or some value high enough to risk playing one). |

Just look at what's happening in baseball right now. Less than a week into the season, one of the teams just had 11 people (players and coaches) test positive. One third of the Marlin's traveling organization has tested positive. They've had to postpone their game with the Orioles tonight and the Phillies (whom the Marlins just finished playing) have postponed their game with the Yankees tonight. No announcements yet about anything beyond tonight's games.
I'm in for a separate league. |

Luis Perez - QB for the NY Guardians (XFL).
From his Wikipedia page:
As a child, Perez went bowling with his family. Eventually, he started attending a bowling league every Tuesday at age nine before being entered into tournaments. He soon became a top rated amateur in California, bowling 12 perfect games with the plan to go to a university on a bowling scholarship. |

A Battle Worthy of the Maccabees
It's fitting that this year's championship will be decided just as Hanukkah is beginning. Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates the victory of the Maccabean Army over a much larger occupying force. The legend of the oil in the lamp lasting for 8 days is a nice story, but the true miracle of Hanukkah was that the Maccabees were able to defeat a much larger army. Perhaps Billy and his Blast roster can be like the underdog Maccabees as he takes on the multi-title winning Skullsplitters. If so, there might be people telling his story and singing songs in remembrance of his victory for generations to come.
If anyone is interested in learning more about Hanukkah and the history of the Maccabees, this link is a great place to start.

Holy Crap!!!
I spent half of Monday formulating how I was going to respond to Dave's post and then Sean came along and vomited right into the middle of all the diarrhea the rest of us have been dropping into this toilet bowl. Hopefully I can make some kind of sense of this mess. I'm not sure if should try to figure out who's responsible for each little bit or just try and flush the whole thing at once. Like Dave, I hope no one takes offense at what I'm saying. My intent isn't to offend - I'm just trying to be honest and state my opinion.
First of all, I'm not against change. I just don't want it to be done purely for the sake of change, there needs to be a good reason for it. I still don't see what is negatively affecting the league to the point of needing to change how we handle QBs. Maybe I'm stuck in my ways. Maybe I'm afraid of radical innovation. Or maybe I'm afraid to potentially waste a full season of a great league because we decided to try something that "might work out really well" and it didn't. What I do know is that it will take some serious convincing to get me to agree to major scoring/roster changes. You can say things like "I thought this league was based on..." or "Why can't we make something great even greater..." or any other kind of comment like that and it won't have any influence on me. You may as well be saying "Make America Great Again," because when I see those types of statements what actually registers in my mind is "Pay attention to my catchphrase, because it might get you to agree with me more than what I'm actually saying will."
The problem of the QB clusterfuck has nothing to do with our scoring system. It's just a fact of Fantasy Football. The complete randomness of when a QB actually has an above average game is what causes so many QBs to be ranked so close to each other at draft time. There are a few QBs that seem like they will have more of those types of games than those stuck in the clusterfuck and that is what gets them drafted earlier. So you can't break up the clusterfuck by only rewarding the top tier QBs or by penalizing average performances - those things will only make the clusterfuck bigger. If you truly believe that out of all of the millions of people who play fantasy football we're the ones who can solve this problem - well, thanks for the vote of confidence but don't hold your breath on that one. That isn't to say we shouldn't try. We just need to look at it realistically and address the things that will cause separation within that group of QBs at draft time. I have no clue what those things would be or even how to figure out what they are. And I have no interest in trying to figure it out. But if someone else wants to try, go for it.
Fantasy Football is about assigning a point value to each player's on field performance. Period. End of sentence. Trying to create a system based on game situation is Fantasy Fantasy Football. And by that I mean that it's a fun concept to discuss, but it's not realistic. It's nowhere as easy to actually implement that type of system as one might think it would be. For instance, when did garbage time start in the Broncos-Texans game this past Sunday? Was it the last 5 minutes? The last 10 minutes? Was it at Halftime when the score was 31-3. Was it when the Broncos scored on the opening drive of the 2nd half and went up 38-3? Or was it at some other point chosen for some other reason? In order to create a situation based scoring system, you have to account for every possible situation. Plus, Keith will need to write a program capable of recognizing all the variables, otherwise the entire scoring system will be the equivalent of our system for onside kicks and everything will have to be manually entered. (BTW, the Lions had a successful onside kick against the Bears on Thanksgiving Day) If someone is able to successfully come up with that type of system, I'd prefer to see it in action before applying it to this league. Heck, I may even be willing to play in the test league for it.
That's all I can think of right now. I may have more to say later.
Go WRMC and Go Blast. BIFROST IS COMING!!! |

I'm really posting this just to make Joe read
The reason that QBs don't get drafted until the 8th round is because after the top 4-5 QBs are taken, the next 10-12 QBs are all relatively equal to each other at draft time. If you miss out on the top tier QBs, it really doesn't matter which QB from the big clusterfuck that follows you end up drafting. At that point in time, they are basically equal to each other (especially when considering what their average weekly production will be). Think back to your draft prep this year, was there a huge difference between your QB6 and your QB16? My guess is that there wasn't. Unless you have specific players that you do or don't want on your team, drafting anyone from that group is fine.
If your goal is to get QBs drafted higher, you need to eliminate the clusterfuck at Tier 2 or there's no reason not to wait on drafting a QB (especially when you consider that only 1 of those first 4 QBs taken actually made our playoffs this year). I don't think any of the QB proposals that I can remember seemed to do that. More often than not, they seem to make the clusterfuck bigger.
As for Jeremy's proposal, I don't see why a QB should get negative points because his team's defense gave up 41 points. Nor do I think a QB should get 6-8 bonus points because the other team's kicker missed a list minute FG in a 10-7 game.
Fuck the Bass. |

The thing that gets me about the QB issue
Here's the thing that stands out the most to me about all the suggestions involving changing how we handle QBs.
What exactly is the problem and why does it need to be fixed?
If the problem is that QBs are going later in the draft than other players that score less points than QBs, why is that a problem? I certainly don't see it as being a problem. I can see why people may think it doesn't make sense, but to me it doesn't seem like the kind of issue that would require making major changes to how we run the league.

Articles don't have to be just on weekends. Also, we may need to define what a "substantial article" can contain in it. Personally, I think people should have the freedom to write about whatever topic they want, just try to tie it in some way to the league and/or football.

A great idea
I'm all for it. With 12 teams and a 13 week regular season, we could easily have everyone take a week. It shouldn't be difficult to have a schedule set up far enough in advance for people to have something ready for their assigned week. If someone does miss their week, they can make it up after everyone else has done theirs (or whenever possible). If someone doesn't post one at all, the punishment should take place during the following draft weekend rather than be something that affects the league or the standings. |

Maybe fortune can bestow upon me a 33 point performance by my defense.
I'll be celebrating by playing with a friend's band tomorrow night here in DC. They're called Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees and Beyond. They do metal covers of disco songs and other stuff that anyone our age would know and sing along to. I made a demo of me playing along with a song from their latest CD so they could hear what it would sound with Theremin added.

Roast away

Obviously I didn't realize it was a rolling 2 year calendar. The first 9 weeks of 2017 were pretty strong for me, so it'll be hard to keep up with those as they fall out of the calculations. However, I don't see any realistic way I get back into Asgard. Sean would be the easiest person to catch. He had 6 more wins and 130 more points than me last season - I would have to outperform him by at least that much to pass him this season. |

That's how this realignment system works
My 8-5 season from 2017 no longer counts. Only my 4-9 season from last year and my performance this year count towards realignment. You have to be consistent every year to stay in the same place. One really good or one really bad year will have a huge effect. |

This is a very good proposal in a lot of ways
After Keith posted this proposal, I spoke with him on the phone about how we had a trade deadline in my old Yahoo league that was always around this same time or even a week sooner. Along with eliminating last minute trades, I think that moving the trade deadline for Ragnarok back to week 10 would help greatly with a couple of other issues.
1) There would negate the proposal for having two different trade marketplaces. 2) Fire sales would basically be eliminated.

I only see 7 beds plus a sofa bed in the pictures, but I think we've had enough people offer to sleep on couches and floor/air mattresses that this shouldn't be an issue.

Just make all trades involving only one team in playoff contention be automatically up for league review (the teams involved are not allowed to vote). Owners are free to vote yes or no for any reason - it's not a question of shenanigans. |

I've seen leagues that give points for rushing attempts.
Usually it would be 1/2 point per rushing attempt. It tends to make an even wider gap between the top RBs and the committee RBs. And gives an edge to running QBs also.
I was in a league that did the opposite - subtracted partial points for each rush. The theory was that a player who got 100 yards on 10 carries should score more points than a player who got 100 yards on 25 carries. the same type of system went for passing attempts and receptions. |

My .02
I don't really see the need to change things. Fantasy football has a HUGE amount of luck involved (see Keith's analysis of Sean and Zach's teams). That's just how it works. Last season, both wild card teams had better records than 2 of the division winners and not a peep was made about that. Looking back to when we switched to 4 divisions, there have only been 2 of the 11 seasons where there wasn't a wild card team that had a better record (or an equal record with more points scored) than at least one division winner.
The only difference that I see between those situations and what's being talked about now is that we're guaranteed to have a wild card team with 10+ wins this year. Does it suck for the team that ends up in that spot? In some ways yes, but at least they're in the playoffs. This wasn't an issue when it involved 8 or 7 win teams, I don't see why it's an issue just because it happens to involve a 10 win team.
The best comparison would be to look at the MLB playoffs from this past season. There were 3 teams that won 100 games this year and one of those teams (the Yankees) ended up in the wild card game. Plus, Oakland was the bottom seed in the AL with a record that would have made them the top seed in the NL. Again, that's just how it works.
No system will work perfectly, and I think the one we've been using for the past 12 years is fine. |

There's still one week left in the regular season and Jeremy has already broken the season scoring record (according to the Hall of Fame page) and Kent is only 18 points shy of setting a new points allowed record. |

This discussion seems to have died out
Keith and I had a discussion about this topic last night and felt it was important to make sure everyone is on the same page. The Scoring page for the league shows that the league configuration is 2 QB draft minimum and 19 roster spots - which is not how we've been running the league. I don't know how many people have noticed that the website contradicts how we've actually been doing things, but apparently this isn't the first year we've had this situation. It definitely caused some confusion for me and is something that we should get cleared up as a league. The last thing we need is to be in the middle of the draft and realize that people have different understandings of the league configuration.
For that reason, Keith and I decided that this year's draft should keep the settings the way that we've been doing them - 3 QB minimum and 20 roster spots. We can address the situation and make any necessary decisions/changes in the future.

Math related topic

Everyone has chimed in with what nights they'll be at the draft house. So now we can get down to the finances. The total cost of the house is $1686.75. Here is the breakdown of that total:
1,300 - 4 nights rent at $325/night 160 - cleaning fee 139 - service fee from website 87.75 - tax
Here is the breakdown of how many nights people will be staying.
Me - 3 Zach - 3 Billy - 3 Keith - 4 Jeremy - 3 Sean - 3 Kent - 3 Joe - 3 Scott - 3
That's a total of 28.
1686.75 divided by 28 is 60.25. Cost per night is $60.25 - I'm fine if you round down to 60.
Cost for people whose attendance involves flying is 0.00. |

Just to put this out there for everyone
Keith and I have spent a good amount of time discussing the QB/roster spot issue.
My suggestion was to eliminate the 3rd QB and leave that roster spot undrafted. The roster spot would have to be filled in free agency. We would still have 20 roster spots, but only 19 would get filled through keepers and the draft. This option isn't a whole lot different from what already happens when people drop their 3rd QB immediately in free agency.
Personally, I would prefer this over eliminating the roster spot and also over having 2 coaches choices. But I think it would probably be easier to just keep things the way they are than to switch to this type of system.

For the most part, it doesn't matter to me
Just as I reminder, these are the main things I'm looking for.
Enough beds for everyone (sleeps 12 with 6 beds might be a little awkward). Internet that can handle all of us Cable/Satellite TV A big enough room/space to run the draft
Those are the basics, everything beyond those will help lessen the likelihood that we drive each other crazy.
We really haven't had any problems getting those basics taken care of, with the exception of the cable/internet issues last year. |

Before everyone checks out for the off-season...
I just want to remind everyone that we do need to find a new place for next year's draft. It's not an immediate concern - but the sooner it's handled, the less we'll need to think about it. Just keep your eyes open to any possibilities when you get the chance.
Thanks again to everyone for another great season. |

Seeing as Duke Johnson provided the winning margin, are you now officially a Duke fan? |

Free Agency glitch
There was a glitch in the 12:00 Free Agency. I bid 6 on Brandon LaFell (dropping "Sir" Paul Richardson), but the bid didn't go through. Keith has put that through. It doesn't show on the FA results, so I posted this here to announce it. |

Nice job as always Scribbles.
But just to clarify one thing. The gamblers don't really have a 23 point lead going into today's games. Will Lutz is showing 11 points for this week even though he hasn't played yet. Of course, this means that Lutz will put up 15 when he does play. |

Tiki House update
I just got a message from David, the owner of the Tiki House. He's selling the house. So it looks like we will need to find a new place for next year's draft.
He told me that he didn't know if the new owners will be renting the place, but will pass on the info he finds out that they are. |

I'm not really for it.
I see it as being more of a Fu related thing than a MB related thing. I'm not overly fond of the prospect of free agency bids being decided by who has done the best in gambling on the matchups. Especially later in the season when balances tend to be low and a big free agent can appear out of nowhere (like CJ Anderson in 2014).
That being said, I'm not completely against it. There would need to be restrictions. I'm thinking 1 MB per matchup or a maybe total MB bet per week limit. Maybe we can do a test for the rest of this season. We can pick the match ups based on the current spread system for the rest of the season just to gather data on how good we are (or aren't) at making these kinds of bets. |

Just a reminder that the Southern Culture / Bat Fangs show is October 28th at Motorco.
Try to make it if you can. It should be a lot of fun.
