A sad day.
Hey all, I just wanted to address everyone here one last time. Due to my mothers declining health I don’t feel like I can commit to another season. I will probably be a full time caregiver for the immediate future and can’t really predict much beyond that. I would like to say that I have been truly blessed to be in this league, a definite highlight of my life. A rare and beautiful one of a kind thing that most people don’t get to experience. And it’s all because of all of you, what an amazing and unique group of people.

I wish you all the best and with much love,
Scott (Rattus)

I’m off work at 10 am every day and can be free any afternoon/evening. I can’t stay awake too late with only myself to keep me amused. I might try to break the beer cans stacked on head record but do I have to be passed out for it to count?

Moving Forward?

Let's jump in.
I would really like to implement Sean's draft realignment this year along with the peered divisions. The peered division is not really that much of a disadvantage for the top teams, only two potentially tougher games each year. And having one of the top picks every year is a huge advantage the way it stands now. With the draft realignment if you have a rough year then at least you know that next year you'll have a better shot at nabbing your next franchise player/rookie keeper with one of the top picks. I'm all for it this year.

Bubble me
Sorry for the tardiness here but for what it's worth and in a reversal of thought I like the bubble idea. After reading all the threads (which took a really long time) I came to the conclusion that for me sacrificing the fun and mayhem of a draft day redraft debacle by the bottom teams would be out-funned by a more competitive league with a clearer path to improve your standings from year to year. Especially if we base our rankings on a two year basis. It would be a greater point of pride for me to be in higher ranked division and if I fell off then at least I would have a better shot of climbing again. When I first got into Fantasy Football every rule we made was in an attempt to try to make our league as close to the NFL as possible. I realize that Fantasy is completely different than the NFL game but I do like to try to parallel as much as possible and giving the top teams the toughest schedule does this. I'm in with bubble. And Hillary.

Which brings to mind one of my all time favorite movie quotes...
"i am not ashamed. i have known love. i have known rejection. i am not ashamed to dclare my feelings; take trust for instance, or friendship. these are important things in life. these are things that matter, that help you on your way. if you can't trust your friends, well what then... what then?.. oh, yes. i believe in friends. i believe we need them. but if one day you can't trust them anymore, well, what then... what then?" ewan mcgregor in shallow grave 1994. better with a scottish accent.

I agree with Sean's take on the whole purpose of trading. I would like to think that even if I'm out of the race I can still try to make my team the best it can possibly be, avenge earlier losses, keep my most hated rival from the playoffs, get a better pick in next years draft, whatever. And in the case of these last two trades they seem fair enough, at least to make arguments either way. It also seems even more dangerous to the balance of the leagues season to say it's ok to trade if there is a franchise player involved but not just to make a team better for the sake of competition. What would prevent a non-playoff team from unloading a shit ton of talent to an already good team for one great franchise player thus setting themselves up for next year. This could suddenly make the good team great and more greatly alter the landscape of the playoffs than a poor trade of lesser players. The bottom line for me is that if I didn't trust everyone in this league I wouldn't be in it. That doesn't mean I don't expect dumb trades not to be made (myself included), it just means that I can't see anyone intentionally making their team worse just to help out another owner or screw with the league. Am I wrong about that?

Hey good people - just a heads up here.
I was not intentionally negligent by starting a ruled out TE, I got too busy at work to check and see if I had acquired the dude I bid on and so was unable to start him instead. I would have usually been able to do this on my break but did not have the opportunity today. Just so you peeps know I'm still in it and will try my best till the very end. Hopefully there will be no ramifications down the road for other teams due to my failure. Hopefully I start winning!!!

Ballad of Hollis Brown - "The Rats have got your flour - Bad blood it got your mare". It's alright, ma (I'm only bleeding) - "While one who sings with his tongue on fire - Gargles in the rat race choir". Froggie went a courtin' - "Without my uncle Rat's consent, I wouldn't marry the president, uh, huh."

Bottom line for me and bell bottoms.
I've discovered that the key to happiness in life is not what you do but who you do it with. Relationships, friendships, coworkers, league mates, whatever. You could shovel shit for a living but if everyone you worked with was happy and pleasant and sang "Hi ho, hi ho" all day it might be the best job in the world. That being said, next year will be my 20th season playing fantasy football (super stoked about that, gonna splurge on some caviar to celebrate) but last year in Ragnarok was my favorite even though my team was one of my worst. The reason is because of all you other owners. Best group of owners I've ever been involved with and if I could only do one league I would quit all the others - even my long standing league. I think Justin did an incredible thing by showing the perseverance to draft online but missed out on experiencing the true purpose and meaning of this league by not being able to be there in person. Draft day may be better than Christmas but only if you're there for it. If his post was an attempt at humor then make amends. Sean summed up the things that make this league great and unique and I wouldn't want to change anything. In other leagues I care more if I win or lose because that's pretty much the bottom line but in this league I care more about having a blast at next years draft. And cave man scoring systems remind me of Kent and bell bottoms, quirky and out of date but I still love them.

If you have not tried FanDuel, are not a problem gambler (or are a problem gambler but are really good at fantasy sports and looking to retire from your day job) and have the free time to pursue even more fantasy football, then I highly recommend it. It's a new draft every week! And yes you can drink all you want and yell "fuck yea bitches" with every pick you make. The CF league should be fun, you can make up for all your draft day mistakes which I for one find very appealing.

I found myself at work today waiting on two older (my age) ladies who couldn't decide on which fish buy, weighing the various arguments for farm raised vs. wild, buying local, mercury, etc. After about 15 minutes they finally decided and I had this overpowering urge to yell "Fuck yeah bitches". So thanks Dave, I can't get that out of my head and am strangely glad that I can't. After 19 years of doing this that was the most memorable draft I've had the pleasure of being a part of and by far the best group of owners bar none. So thank you all and I cannot wait to stay for the whole draft.

I feel like I'm stepping upon hallowed ground or maybe tiptoeing. I wanted to thank you all for allowing me into this amazing league. Over the years I've peaked (spied) in on this Ragnarok league as Keith has always talked it up as the gold standard. The level of commitment, camaraderie and entertainment is obvious from the forum posts alone. I will do my utmost to match that commitment and maybe even "then some" on you all. Can't wait and my FP and Rook are set.

FYI In keeping with the Ragnarok theme I named my team Rattus Norvegicus as the greatest lasting legacy of the Vikings, for long after the day of Ragnarok when all the Vikings are comfy in Valhalla the Norwegian Rat - whom the Vikings brought with them everywhere they sailed - will rule the world. As will my team.

Great idea.
I like it and would even be down for a larger penalty of say 5 photons taken away from the 100 starting photons for each day of non nominations within the first 10 days of the draft. So you could potentially lose half your starting money if you don't nominate at all - at which point you shouldn't even be in the league.

Looks like the previous post about some of the rookies having doppelgangers is true. On the 9/18 free agency I dropped Aaron Dobson and he was picked up in that same session which should not be possible. He is now on a roster and still available as a free agent. Not a huge deal but just something to keep an eye on, I don't want to have to play someone with the same player I have, it would be too much like beating myself which I already do.

Thanks Keith - for showing me the error of my ways. The Chicago D actually held Atlanta to 6 pts as the other 6 of Atlanta's pts came off a Cutler pick 6. Makes too much sense. The only question I still have is do we both get an extra 2 pts for the fumble/intereption plus the TD? Just for future reference and to keep the point totals correct. And sorry to all for clogging up the airwaves, I'll keep my future scoring questions to the report stat error section. Good luck to everyone this week.

Pointless...
...I'm sure. This is because I probably have something else wrong but as far as the 5 sacks goes I wonder if the NFL didn't update Peppers sack total at some point later in the week as they sometimes do but failed to update the team total as well. The NFL changing player stats during the week happens every so often and has impacted a few fantasy games that I've been a part of over the last 17 years. Maybe this is a moot (which actually means 'debatable' but is misused by everyone including me) point, but I'd like to get the point totals right at least. Anyone have a clue?

PS Another post = more FU.

Posted - 9/24/2011 4:27:28 PM Post a reply to Still some issues but spell it out for me.
Still some issues but spell it out for me.
First of all the Doo Dads D should have only scored 6 pts not 8 as they don't get 2 pts for an interception plus 6 for the interception return for a touchdown (according to the most awesome Customized Football powers that be [really]). That puts the Daddy's total at 89. In the same sense the Big Apple should not get 4 pts for 2 fumble recoveries plus 6 for one being run back - they should get 2+6=8 +2 for an interception =10 +3 for held to 12 = 13. The next issue is that NFL.com lists the bears total sacks at 5 but only credits 2 to Melton, 1 to Peppers and 1 to Okoye which = 4. USA Today has the same stats and the only place I could find an extra sack was on the Bears website which credited Peppers with 2 not 1 but NFL.com is our stats bible - right? If there were only 4 sacks then 13+4=17 which puts the Apples pt total also at 89 as we currently have their D listed with 25 pts and 25-17= 8 pts less than the 97 currently listed. Not really caring about the record so much as just trying to get a handle on team D as I've always played IDPs. I'm also trying to increase my FU which I understand not only increases with number of posts but also with their length. Let me know if I'm miscalculating somehow.

Free Agency, Illegal Rosters, Tiebreakers
Posted - 9/23/2009 7:36:48 PM Post a reply to Thoughts
Thoughts
So one HC is OK, that's good. I'd like for the site to not allow you to submit a starting lineup if you have an illegal roster. Sometimes you might not get the free agents you bid on in order to make your roster legal so if the site could enforce the 18 offensive player limit and require you to waive any offensive players that put you over that limit before you can set your roster. That way you might go into a game with less than the total number of players that you could have, say only 1 db but at least you wouldn't have extra offensive players. So it wouldn't be illegal to have only 1 defensive player at a certain position you just could not have more than 18 offensive players and would thus have either an open roster spot or 3 HC's or something. As far as the previous games involving illegal rosters I think we need to consider that the season had a late start with a last minute draft date involving quite a few auto drafts that did not fill out rosters as needed and I think just a slow start in general. I seriously doubt that anyone won any games because they had more than 18 offensive players on their roster. I'm for setting things straight from here on out and not trying to do some kind of retroactive punishment. And.... I really miss speaking like a pirate.

I've noticed several failed bids where the person was not outbid. What causes this? I did try to pick up a 2nd HC on Sunday but was not allowed, perhaps that means we should only be required to have one. Never did get an official ruling on that and I would love to not have to pick one up so I'll wait to hear before making the attempt again.

I'll take your word for it but...
...I don't remember it and was going by the rules verbage. We went to two defensive players at each position for a good reason, but that same reason does not apply to HC's unless we want to make them more fantasy relavent too. 10 pts for a win -5 for a loss? Not so much. I'll pick up another HC at the next free agency if that is the official ruling but if so then I would like to vote to get rid of that requirment at some point. But Keith, what is the official call on this before I drop one of my O-linemen.

...let me know if I am mistaken. I believe each teams home page would warn them if they have an illegal roster and at which positions, at least mine did after the draft. Not sure what a good penalty would be, if it's not severe enough then I might have an illegal roster every week. It would be kind of tough to do anything retroactive though don't you think?

But it's just not as fun to sit in a sports bar with 12 tv's on (or even at home wih 1 tv on) and try to follow your defensive players. The updates and replays only show them when they score a TD. And though D players are somewhat of an afterthought in this league, they can still win you games and even championships by seperating you from the other good teams just enough to win the close ones. I kind of like the current balance where it's still more fun to follow all the offensive players but if you let your D slide, it's probably going to cost you at some point. 1 point in any given game can be the difference between going to the playoffs or playing golf. For me, although I like watching defensive football, it's much easier and more enjoyable to focus on the offensive players output come game day. If we do want to make them more important and decrees the pool of free agents then I would be willing to go with the 9 player D roster scenario and add 3 more defensive starters - 2 DB's, 2 LB's and 2 DL's each week. This would potentially double your D's scoring making them more important without putting them on the same individual plane as the O guy's. They might also become more important tools in balancing out trades.

Totally awesome rules modification proposal for 2008, Number 2

Rule 1 - good, rule 2 - I don't care.
I really like the Rule 1 proposal, it will definately add to what we are trying to do and take out some of the luck factor in determining who is the best over the long haul. Good job Dan and Keith. As far as the IDP rule, it really doesn't matter to me. I like the goal but am not sure this will achieve it. Since we have so much more emphasis on offensive scoring (which I like), I tend to not really care about my defense. That is to say, I know that every point counts and having a stud D can win you a lot of games and so I will keep my starters up to date, but I was one of those who prefered to reserve as many slots as possible for potential offensive players, even sitting on some dudes for a couple years and just updating my 3 defensive players as needed and preferably in trades. And this seemed to pay off more for me than having 2 IDP's at each position. If I'm forced to have 9 total IDP's (and I do like the regardless of position approach) then I imagine I'll still only focus on my main 3 guys at each of the 3 positions and let the other 6 grow old on my bench, to some degree at least. With only 30 quid per year (which I also like), spending too much to keep a 9 man defensive roster up to date would not be in my plans. I certainly would'nt spend any money on them just to remove players from the pool. The defensive player scoring is so much more fluid than the offensive scoring from week to week and year to year that even with 9 man D rosters I bet we'll be able to pick up some good guys on a regular basis. Unless of course everybody else spends all their quid on those guys, in which case - all the better for me. I'm happy to try it, I just don't think it will accomplish much. Giving D more scoring would accomplish the goals but I don't want to do that, I like the balance we have. Maybe there's another solution or maybe I'm just plain wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

Funny you should ask about Martin, his rookie year and your rookie year were the same as my rookie year and the rookie I drafted was Joey Galloway and I drafted Steve Young #1. I even had Barry Sanders on my team. 1995. I miss keeping records with pen and paper and doing my own scoring and most of all having to do my own research.

Once you pass the police station on the right then look for Barclay on the left. If you get to Estes you've gone too far. Turn left onto Barclay then go to the end and turn right onto Ward St. 6th house on the right. 960-7332 if this isn't clear or Map Quest. I'll grab some bagels in the AM so Will, you can just bring the ladies.

I'm happy to draft anywhere. Jaimie might also have a good option but if not then my place is fine. If so then I'll post directions tonight. I just want to drink beer at 9:00 am, I mean draft.

Yes, I like the private part but I would like to be able to reread notes that I have sent just to remind myself of what I may have actually proposed or said so that I may kick myself in the head if needed. Can you make so that you can read both the notes sent to you and the notes you have sent?

Wow, the draft should be very intersesting. I don't think we've ever seen this many teams purge. Maybe with all the valuable veterans now in the draft a couple of the rookies might actually fall to me. And Will, I'll give you all my quid for your #1 pick. Can't wait till the draft.

None yet.
Picks have been traded without knowing the order in the past based on promises like "my first pick, not to be lower than round 10.", but it heats up after the order is finalized on cut day.

Defiance wins

Defiance wins
Looks like Donnie Edwards has not been scored, he had 12 tackles = 6 points and thus gives the Defiance the win over the Vultures. If everything else is right then I guess this only affects playoff seeding. And... I love the tumbleweeds Dan, hopefully you'll be seeing a lot of them in your starting lineup over the next two weeks.

I probably won't be able to get to a computer between now and kickoff on Sunday so am posting here that via verbal communication with David prior to the Miami game (also couldn't get to a computer) I benched Hines Ward (mistake) and am starting Greg Jennings in his place. Can't make the changes since Ward is already locked in.

I just wanted to say it's great to have some fresh road kill in the league. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I do, it's the only league where I can ponder my roster and make trades and pick-ups in the offseason. It's almost like I'm a real GM! Sniff.

Are we done?
Anyone? Because if we are then I want to transfer some of my players to another league. And I'd like to put my quid into one of my off-shore accounts so Uncle Sam doesn't keep nibbling at it. I'm game though, Jaimie works with a good guy who might be willing to take over a team. He won all three leagues he was in last year so we might not really want him though. And Keith said he might have someone. It's getting pretty late so what's the feeling out there?

Before I can even think of creating my keeper list I need to know what is going to happen to the players from the Slashers and Rogues. Are we going to try to get new owners to take their teams over or are all of their players going into the draft pool? Or what? My strategy will be very different depending.

Mega Trade!!!
The Turkey Vultures have traded all of their quid to the Rogues and Slashers for all of their players and all of their quid. To even things out the Rogues and Slashers also threw in all of their draft picks. Yipee. Sorry to see you guys leaving, it sure won't be the same in the Aces High, assuming their is any life left at all. Anyone else thinking of bowing out or is there a collective will to plug the dam? I was looking forward to starting Alexander and L. T. for an entire year.

I second your proposal. I like Coach, even if he is only worth 1 point and now the 2nd tie breaker.

I would also like to see us adding one more offensive starter such as a flex player or some kind of mandatory rookie slot at some point. With a 10 team league and our current starter system everyone is loaded. One more offensive starter would spread things a little thinner and make it more interesting. We could shoot for adding something after the next season to give everyone time to prepare. Anyone?

Vultures vote NO to late drop for Rogues! Just kidding, no problem with me as three or four picks at the end of the draft might get you a second tier coach at best. And Jim, you've already won - as the team with the most players in half way houses. "Pass the soap Jamal."

Let's get in one week of FA before the draft. It's now or never. I think we should go ahead and implement a standard offseason FA period now so we don't have to keep guessing every year. I'm for doing it the 2 wednesdays prior to the draft every year.

Gee Keith - I hate to second guess whom you choose to start but Hoover and Faulk over Rudi Johnson who was the only one starting? Rudi's 3 points would have put you in a tie with the tie breaker with only Warfield left. What was the thinking there, maybe you heard something?
