Kill the Serpentine?
There was an editorial in the Aces High Times from last season, asking if we should get rid of the serpentine format and just go with a straight draft. The reason for this is that we have a true dynasty system, and teams are keeping a nucleus of players. It makes no sense to have a serpentine system because it's actually an unfair way to perform the draft.
The reason for having a serpentine draft in a standard fantasy league is that those rosters are starting from scratch each season. In that situation, it is fair to spread out the top talent by using a serpentine approach. With our situation, the top talent is already signed to teams (except for rookies, obviously, but those are a drop in the bucket of the 250 players that are to be picked).
So we end up with a situation were a team that has a worst draft position actually can get better picks than a better draft position would, because the worst team picks twice before the better team gets their second pick. That's nuts.
I propose that as of the 2005 Draft, we kill the serpentine and follow the NFL's lead on this one.
