ANOTHER LAME EXPLANATION FROM CHILDRESS Posted by Mike Florio on October 13, 2008, 2:52 p.m. EDT Two weeks ago, Vikings coach Brad Childress demonstrated that he’s not fit for the job he now holds via the explanation he offered up for choosing to punt while trailing by 13 points with roughly two minutes to play and no time outs.
“Based on the way we were playing defense, I thought we’d have a chance to get it back,” Childress said.
And then the Titans took a knee three times and the game was over.
Childress unveiled another nonsensical excuse for his decision not to go for two points when a short completion and long run from Bernard Berrian narrowed the gap to two points, 10-8, with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter.
Though the coaching chart indicated that the Vikings should have gone for two, Childress applied the “not in the third quarter” exception.
Um, Brad? It was late in the third quarter, and the game hadn’t exactly been a slugfest. Besides, what would the Vikings have lost if they’d tried for two and failed?
“We wouldn’t be kicking or having a chance at a game-winning field goal here at the end,” Childress said.
What? And to think I spent all those months calling Mike Tice a meathead.
Here’s the only explanation that arguably makes sense under the circumstances — by going for one, the Vikings would have been down by only one score, even if the Lions had scored another touchdown and extra point. But in a game where points were flowing like Dow Jones dividend checks, it would have been foolish to assume that either team would be in position to score another point.
So, without question, Childress should have gone for two.
“You just have to decide,” Childress said. “It’s a coach’s decision.”
Fine. But when it’s time for Zygi Wilf to make an owner’s decision, we hope he takes into account the fact that his coach made a yet another bad decision.
