Conversation thread - not a proposal.
I listened to a dopey podcast on the way-too-early rankings, etc and it got me thinking. And I thought that opening a small can of worms felt right. It's June, and we have missed the spring banter of draft houses. So. I'm not making any proposals here. This is purely a conversation thread.

I was thinking about the draft and I feel fortunate that we have a large roster to work with, including an IR spot. But my mind wandered down the rabbithole of what the fall would look like: shortened season, coaches or players getting sick, parts of squads or even entire teams being quarantined for 14 days, which could affect at least two games. In our league, the last couple of seasons, playoff spots came down to - not overall records - but total points! Two weeks without a starter could tank a team. Then my head went to a specialized spot on the roster. Now, maybe you have multiple players with COVID. That would suck, probably makes this not much fun, and overly frustrating. (It may be a frustrating season as it is!) Obviously an owner shouldn't be held harmless with all of his C-19 players... but maybe... one? Example: If Mahomes was quarantined the morning of September 20th for 14 days, he would sit out that game, the 28th, and Oct 4th. Three games! (I know he could be injured and miss time anyway, but we have a process for this, so hear me out) What if there was a hypothetical C19 spot where I could designate Mahomes for those three games and then immediately stick him back on my starting roster, without ever dropping him in FA (because I would probably never get him back, or spend my entire bank getting him back, because of COVID), or I would not play him, taking up a roster spot for a player that wasn’t “sick/quarantined” for a given amount of time. When he’s activated by the NFL is when I could activate Mahomes that day. But you couldn’t bounce players in and out of the “C19” spot at will from week to week. Only the NFL could unlock the player out of that roster spot by either activating him, or in the unfortunate event that they could not return to the field for any number of horrible reasons.

I’m only bringing this up because this isn’t the new normal, and it isn’t normal playing conditions. It wouldn’t be a new permanent rule/roster spot, but rather an exception for one season. I haven’t done a deep analysis or considered the time needed to adjust that in Ragnarok, which is why I’m just talking, and to see if anyone else has considered anything like this. Again, I’m glad we have a larger draft and deeper rosters. And I would think this would really be for Franchise Players, and positional players in the top 5 - 8 spots. If your 3rd or 4th WR gets COVID, I would think you wouldn’t want to designate them C19.

Again, I’m just curious about your thoughts. Also, this is my first day of summer so I’ve been able to brain dump a bunch of things for other thoughts. I hope you’re all doing well! Watauga went from 13 to 19 to 42 in about two weeks. (Mother’s Day and Memorial Day). I guess we’ll see what the protests and marches will do in the next month or so. I wrote this as a stream of consciousness post, so there may be a better idea for owners in this situation, and it also could be a waste of time! I’m gonna think about it. And also about how our draft weekend could look in a remote setting - like my school year, probably.

    Football!

    excellent points about C19 slots
I really like the idea of having a special type of injury slot for players who get hit by the Honey Badger 19 Covid-19. It's kind of a no-brainer in terms of pure personnel management. We would just need to figure out some details such as how many C19 rosters slots would be reasonable, etc. (or maybe no limit on C19 slots).

What's more concerning to me is the other point you brought up, about the hyper-competetiveness of our league and how our playoff spots are now being determined by fractions of an inch. We'll probably be seeing much more disruption in NFL 2020 than ever before. There could easily be scenarios where swaths of players will not be allowed to play on any given Sunday. Even sport books will be navigating unknown territory. It could be totally crazy.

With 2020 being so unpredictable, this insane level of chaos might actually give the Asgard Thunder a chance to win.
