Stats on DF and Kickers in Week One
We all have opinions on the new scoring systems for DF and Kickers. I for one expressed some doubts about the new scoring for DF, so I decided to look at the numbers for starting DF's and Kickers in Ragnarok, and compare them to the numbers in Midgard, which uses the old scoring system. What I discovered is rather surprising.

In week one of Ragnarok, starting DF's scored a total of 107pts, for an average of 8.9pts per DF. Kickers scored a total of 67pts for an average of 5.5pts per kicker. My fears of DF's being far less valuable than kickers seems to be unfounded for this week.

Even more suprising is what I found when comparing these numbers to week one in Midgard. Starting DF's in Midgard scored a total of 80pts for an average of 8.0pts per DF. (Note, Midgard is a 10 team league.) Starting Kickers in Midgard scored a total of 63pts for an average of 6.3pts per kicker.

In conclusion, itlooks like DF's actually fared better in the new scoring system, while Kickers fared slightly less well. Obviously, one week does not prove anything but I believe I might have been a bit hasty in judging the effects of the new system. I will continue to keep an eye on this as the season progresses. Who knows, Keith might actually know what the hell he is doing after all!!

    more statistics
funny you should be running stats, Kent. i was doing the same thing. here's what i got for week 1, looking at percentage of total points instead of points per game...

    total points: 663
starting Ds: 102 pts (15.4% of total scoring)
    K: 67 pts (10.1%)
    QB: 112 pts (16.9%)
    TE: 30 pts (4.5%)
WR1 (this is the guy who was drafted first by each team, not necessarily the biggest week 1 scorer on the team): 70 pts (10.6%)
    RB1: 102 (15.4%)

So at least for week 1, defense was tied for 2nd in most points by any position, with 15.4%.

These kinds of analyses are something we should try and keep track of through the season. It'd be informative to know how many points defenses get, and whether it's a fair measure of their fantasy importance. My guess is that Midgard defenses will probably score more than Ragnarok defenses over the long run, just because there's no minimum threshold of 2 sacks and 1 turnover. But 1 week's worth of evidence suggests that defenses can sway outcomes, but not to the point where they render other positions like TE or WR3 worthless. So defenses don't score a ton of points, but they score enough to make them nearly as valuable as many franchise players.
that seems like good fantasy football to me!
