Season Deadlines

It's probably high time to decide on a few rules, including when/if we want to have deadlines for free agency and for trades.
FREE AGENCY
My normal opinion on free agency is that I don't like the idea of a playoff-signed free agent being the difference maker in determining a champion. It seems that there is so much effort for so many months, and it's kind of weird to have a Week 16 signing be the determining factor.
That being said, I normally play in leagues with even larger rosters than what we have in 8bit. With those larger rosters, we have a roster lockdown which requires teams to plan ahead and run the playoff gauntlet with what they brought to the playoffs. In 8bit, however, we have a larger starting roster size and only 7 bench slots, so I'm not really going to advocate one approach over the other.
What is everyone's opinion about a free agency deadline? Should we even have one, or just allow FA pickups through Week 16?
TRADES
I definitely support having a trading deadline before the playoffs begin. What are everyone's opinions about a trading deadline?

Trade deadline should probably be about the time some teams are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. When that would be is anyone's guess, but was thinking maybe sometime around week 12 or 13?
If you do a FA deadline, I second the idea of having it just before playoffs start. |

just to solidify things a bit, how about these proposals?
Free Agency deadline:
------------------------
a) the last FA sessions will be for Week 13. We'll have no Free Agency for Week 14 and later.
Trading deadline
------------------------
a) No trades after Week 13.
b) Prior to the final deadline, playoff-eligible teams can only trade with other playoff-eligible teams. And eliminated teams can only trade with other eliminated teams. This way, we don't have an eliminated team skewing the competitive balance of the teams still vying for a championship. |

Question on the trade deadline

Hey Commish. for trade deadlines, you said/proposed no trades after week 13. Then you mentioned a 'final' deadline.
Do you mean that after week 13, teams that are playoff eligible can still trade w/ other eligible teams? (and non-eligible w/ other non-eligible) Just wanted to make sure I understood correctly.

trading clarification

we'll still have a hard stop after Week 13, and not allow any trades after Week 13's 1pm Sunday kickoff.
prior to December 3rd, i was kicking around the idea that teams can only trade with other teams in their same playoff situation. so if a team is 6-6 and in the playoff hunt, they wouldn't be able to trade with someone who is 4-8 and has been mathematically eliminated.
this idea is probably overkill because we don't have any franchise players, but it is something that i was thinking about for a different league that keeps some players from year to year. this limitation specifically addresses the nuance where teams have different agendas when entering a trade; it's my belief that the teams involved in a trade need to have the same goals, and those goals are not in sync when a trade involves a playoff team and a non-playoff team.
so all that blathering aside, yes we'll have a hard deadline of 12/3/17 and there will be no trades allowed after that. |
