I have been a regular subscriber to the Smashmouth Gazette for 19 years. When I opened up my paper this morning, I was disheartened to witness such poor journalism and analysis in the Week 5 edition. Describing the Skullsplitters as "thin on talent," or being based simply on one player, was inaccurate at its core. The Skullsplitters have the following ranked players, based on scoring to date:

    QB: #3, #8
RB: #5, plus Todd Gurley (who is averaging 150yds a game rushing)
    WR: #1, #8, #10
TE: Antonio Gates, who got 18 points this week in his first game back

Also, simply limiting the historical analysis by describing it as two close games and two "blowouts" was irrelevant and seems rushed. It's misleading to describe a loss as a "blowout" when the Skullsplitters put up 79 points in that game. Any overall analysis should certainly consider the fact that the Skullplitters are the #4 team in overall scoring for the year and also the #2 team in Points Against (a mere 9 points behind the Syndrome). It's hard to win when you are a league leader in PA.

It may be interesting to note that if one looks at the head to head matchups and simulates a Head to Head game every week with every other team in the league, this is how the Skullsplitters would stack up:

    Maulers3-2
    Thunder4-1
    Syndrome3-2
    Rattus1-4
    Bass3-2
    Dynasty3-2
    Gamblers3-2
    Rush2-3
    Medical Center2-3
    Mao3-2
    Blast3-2
    Overall30-25

Even though they have an overall winning record when matched up against every team in every week, somehow the Skullplitters managed to come out of the first five weeks with a 1-4 record. And yet the Gazette still ran their whitewashing story on its front page.

Clearly this type of analysis did not take place during the lead up to publishing your latest story. Such lax reporting makes this reader wonder if the newspaper's pro-Maulers bias is influencing the editorial page.

I will continue to be a subscriber to the Smashmouth Gazette, but I hope that the newspaper can return to its roots of being a leader in journalism. Make Walter Cronkite proud, Gazette, make him proud.

    Sincerely,
    K Mickelson, Efland

Note: The letter's length limitation was waived due to the writer being the general manager of the Skullsplitters.

...You've probably noticed over the years that Scribbles' judgement of any given team is almost always based solely on their record (sometimes player nicknames can garner a bit of influence).

You should probably be aware that Scribbles' judgement of anything is based solely on his drug and/or alchohol consumption. The assumption that there is "analysis" taking place is flattering, but wildly inaccurate. Player nicknames do however have an effect. Because they are shiny.

I need to contact the head of your odds making department. As I have serious questions about how said results are made and published. Such as, how can the Skullsplitters be favored over the Rush? Is it because the Rush have scored more points? Or because they have a better record. Even the long time reader Oleg the Finn's fine research states. In a head to head match-up thus far through this season, the Rush would be one of three teams with a winning record, over the Skullsplitters. I think your handicapper needs to have his abacus checked. Otherwise put me in touch with your papers bookie as I'd like to put a finski on the under.
