Are teams moving up a slot? Bidding for slots (as we have done, sure), or something else...

Holding nothing personal against Dat, the noob, but circumstances put the team with the first overall pick. Seems very generous his first year out of the gate. Has anyone else been pondering this? Or has fate handed him one of the prime coveted slots? I have mixed feelings. You have to work hard to earn that first pick.

    we could do a lottery
all teams who have never had the first overall pick could get a ping pong ball for every season they've been in the league, including 2015. then we put all balls in a hopper and the winner gets the #1 pick?

    Interesting...
Not a bad way to go. So, if Blast were to win the lottery, then Dat Mao would take (4th, switching with Billy?) his slot FOR the bidding of draft order. I think that's a good solution that hopefully we would never see again. Anyone else with a bright idea?

i like the idea of a lottery for the top pick
that being said, i'm trying to formulate a more generic approach for slotting new owners - even when we're not dealing with the #1 overall pick. not that i think we'll be having any more changes to ownership, but if it does happen for whatever reason then would it be possible to come up with a more universal system?

for example, let's say that the Koo wins the next eight seasons in a row and then in 2023 he gets 4th place and quits due to being such an arrogant mother fucker. in this scenario, should any team have the option of trying to acquire the 4th overall slot or does it just get slated for the newbie?

i am intrigued with the idea of a system where anyone could opt in to a lottery to get any open slot, but as they say "the devil's in the details."

    1) should seniority matter? probably?

    2) should there be exclusion? for this year's pick, i had suggested that only non-championship-owning teams be able to get the #1 slot. that seems fair but it is also strongly arbitrary. and in the #4 Pick scenario, would this consideration be applicable?

    3) what happens after the pick is granted to an owner? probably the simplest approach would be to put the newbie in the winning owner's old slot #. that way, everyone else's picks aren't being disrupted.

i want to come up with a system that is fair to everyone and which can handle any slot #, not just the overall pick.

that being said, i *really* would like to see this year's #1 pick go to a team which has never had it before, and i do like the proposed lottery solution.

but how can that jive with any sort of universal approach? it doesn't? maybe we just say "fuck it" and do the lottery this year as described, and then worry about the issue again in 2023? i'm down with that, too.

    lottery
not only am i gonna have to rent a podium but also a ping pong ball hopper? Sweet! Gonna bring a leather massage chair with me too. Fuck that, just gonna bring the chair.

it is complicated, but i think the fair thing to do is have every team in the lottery baring Dat. He would then take the winners place in sequence, and every other team would fall back to their rightful place. If some teams have more balls *ehm* in the hopper than others, i am not against it. But I do think all teams must have a chance.

    Lottery
I don't think you'll need to bring a hopper. What if owners that have never had a first pick get one for each year in league, and owners who have won, get a ball for each Champonship. Maybe Keith (or a rep) could film it or Skype it for legitimacy at designated time.

    NFL rules
Overall, I'm okay with any rules that are agreed upon with the league, but based on NFL rules, why not determine the draft order based on the record of the previous season, especially since this is a league of returning owners.

Overall, randomized order by chance such as a lottery seems like a good idea and works but since this league doesn't have an incentive (other than bragging rights) for being the champion, I can see how the winner may want to claim their prize by getting first pick.

We could have 1/2/3 being 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners, and the rest randomized or by record.
That's what I was thinking, let me know what you think...

We could get more complicated and do compensatory picks but that would only be fair if we have a dynasty league in which we keep players from the previous season.

    Just a thought.

    Draft Order. I'm Confused.
Are we talking about changing the way we're determining the draft order in general, or talking specifically about the upcoming season, given that the #1 pick would belong to a noob? I'm assuming the latter; the former always seemed reasonable to me the way it is.

So assuming we're talking about just this upcoming draft, I see the following options:

    1) Change nothing--the noob inherits his team with whatever draft preference associated with it. This has worked well in the past, and the only reason for concern this season is because no one's ever won the league and then peaced out. In this scenario, Dat opens the mother of all fortune cookies and finds himself inheriting an elite team with the first draft spot preference--a far cry from my first season, where the dipshit owner left me with Laveraneus Coles and the 12th pick.

    2) Slide everyone up one spot in the preference order and put the noob in the back. This could be a uniform policy in the (unlikely and tragic) event that others leave--like that arrogant motherfucker, Koo. He's a real dick. If you're a noob, the chance to join our elite league is reward enough. You pick last. Welcome to the league, D-Bag.

    3) Some ridiculous idea involving ping-pong balls, advanced calculus related to team's success, who's never had the #1 pick, etc; a fucking lock box, and a top secret formula guaran-damn-teed to give Keith the #1 pick, which he'll refuse to justify to the rest of us. Seriously, if we go down this road, the possibilities are endless--and I'm not sure that we'd just be overcomplicating the issue. It seems to me #'s 1 or 2 would make the most sense as they'd be easy to enforce..

    draft order
we's only talking about this year, and in general we're gabbing about the scenario where a new owner comes in. while i love the idea of some of the old blood getting a shot at the top pick this year, i tend to agree with the notion that our current system is easy peasy and has worked well in the past. and i agree with that awesome fortune cookie metaphor.

    Dat is #1
Dat keeping the #1 pick seems like a no-brainer. Besides it already being his pick, he would deserve it solely because he's the only one who didn't lay down to a newbie who hated being in the league.

Welcome to Ragnarok, Dat. Excited to meet you. Any friend of Billy and Keith's is sure to be a great addition.

I have no problem with Dat having the number 1 pick
While I do like the idea of having a one-time lottery for this unique situation, I don't see any real need to change anything. If we do end up having a lottery, I think Dat should be included and have a chance at retaining the pick.

The real question here is whether or not Dat should continue the tradition of the pre-draft speech if he has the first pick? I say yes.

    Wasn't trying to complicate things...
but I didn't think we were just going to let ANY new first time owner have the option for "best player" to kick off the draft without at least running the gauntlet called Ragnarok, once. I don't necessarily think it's a guarantee for success or doom either way. I was putting it on the table now instead of waiting until the last possible day to pick a way to go. Outside of Keith, the only other owners who don't care, or want Dat to pick there, have actually HAD the first pick in the past. Not sure if that's coincidence, holds water, or they simply know something we "non-firsters" don't. It would be interesting to hear from other owners who haven't had first pick. I'm not sure I'd even want the first pick, but I do agree with this: after all is said and done, whomever gets the first pick, is indeed required to kickoff with a speech, poem, bad karaoke, (the same defense) rules proposal for NEXT year, performance art, etc.

I'm ok with Dat at #1
He just got lucky, and besides he is stepping up and taking the spot. He should have to make the opening remarks, perhaps with an inspirational story about his life that is utterly false. Welcome to Ragnarok, n00B.

Oh and of course our league isn't racially tolerant enough for another Asian. Scribbles fully intends to take advantage of that.

    Is LeSean McCoy still available?
Give me the first pick, i will waste it, everyone is happy. Zero issue on this side with Dat having the first pick. If he took over a barely mediocre team like the Bass, this would not even be a discussion. I like the fact that our league rewards the winning records in the upcoming draft. Already looking forward to the draft weekend. Hope everyone has a great summer. Welcome to Ragnarok Dat. Going to Amazon now to get a bigger monitor, Keith's trophies have taken over the left side of my monitor.
