| He said that he can't make the first night of the draft because he has to work a restaurant shift. He said that we can call him on the phone while he is working and get his picks that way. |

| I don't see how that is going to work. We already have two owners on Skype and the n00b saying he will try to make his picks on a tablet while travelling. Look folks, we plan this thing a year in advance. Each of us has made a financial commitment, including Stu who manned up and secured the lake house using his own cash. I don't think it is too much to ask that we ALL attend the draft. Wait shifts are easy to get covered or trade for another. Pflooger needs to get it covered and show up. I am not comfortable with paying more to cover for someone that can't meet their obligations. Man the fuck up guys. |

| I think we are at a point in the league where we all need to make Draft attendance THE priority. There are of course extenuating circumstances, such as what happened to Zach last year, but in all cases we need to know that the owners are making the league a priority. I'm at a point where I feel like unless an owner is prepping all year to save for - and be in attendance for - the Draft weekend, then ownership is not a guarantee. I very much want everyone to stay in the league in this year, so I don't mean this as a threat. I mean it as a plea to everyone stupid enough to care about this league as much as I do that we do all we can to keep it together. |

That said, if you've been in this League for that long you should be totally dedicated to being there.
I know some of us have money issues, myself included. But I made sacrifices so I could spend all four days with you crazy fucks. This is something special, something to be treasured. These friendships have outlasted many relationships and I cannot fathom why you would not move heaven and earth to attend for as many days as humanly possible. |

every other year I have to deal with this type of special handling from only one owner. everyone else does exactly what Kent said: "I made sacrifices so I could spend [as many days as possible] with you crazy fucks."
every owner in the league makes sacrifices in order to be here. shit, Gustafson cheerfully said to me the other day, "Even if I win the league every year, I'm still losing money." And in addition to money considerations, half the league has young children and that's a whole other level of required effort on behalf of not only the owners but of their wives as well.
the Draft weekend is really a case of "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." what makes it great is the very fact that everyone DOES show up. live in-person Draft participation is a core requirement of being in this league.
and it's not just about being there for Rounds 1-18. remember the last few years of Will's "participation?" even though he lived in Chapel Hill, and even though we had guys driving from the mountains and flying down from Minnesota, he couldn't be bothered to be here any more than necessary. he would show up 10 minutes before the draft and leave immediately after the last pick was made. he made zero additional effort to have fun and participate in the camaraderie of the weekend. minimum participation is not what this is about.
i find it frustrating that this type of special handling and negotiating for one owner takes place every other year, and that's why i dryly posted the conversation on the league forum. it's about time that some sunshine gets put on this and that the league can see and deal with it. Pflueger, I don't know what you expected when you called me while going back and forth from a funtime beach trip and informed me of your intentions to work a restaurant shift instead of being there for the draft. certainly, at least some post to the rest of the league would have been appropriate. instead, it's dumped on my lap like it always is.
i've reached my limit with the bi-annual special handling. either you want to be at the draft for the weekend or you don't, and i'm not going to beg anyone. but frankly, you should be like the other 10 owners in the league who do move heaven and earth to be there, and who do so gleefully. i don't know why it's always a pain in the ass when it comes to your participation.
it's absurd that we even have to be talking about this. we should be focused on counting down to the greatest weekend of the year. but the hand is forced, so let's deal with it directly and then hopefully going forward this never has to be talked about again. |

Haven't been around an active internet signal the past week or so.. so imagine my disgust--I mean delight--in finding 379 forum posts waiting for me!
I agree with the prevailing sentiment that unless a clearly understandable, extenuating circumstance pops up to prevent attendance at the draft (if not the entire draft weekend), it should not be too difficult to plan this far in advance. Maybe I was somewhat aware that similar shenanigans have happened previously with the same owner, but I didn't pay enough attention to it--and that's some bullshit that we don't need dampening enthusiasm as we head into the stretch run before the draft when we all start acting like kids in a candy store.
I'm in for golf. In for the draft. In for... TOTAL DOMINATION. |
