NFL Network, I will miss you
for a number of years the NFL Network (ch 212 on DirecTV) has been a real treat to watch. however, starting last year and continuing to this year it's been so full of glitter and so dumbed down that it's become unwatchable. year round, we used to be able to hear ex-football players go into detail about techniques, playbooks, game dynamics, and more, but now there is nothing of substance. it's now all about a totally pointless Top 100 list and what Johnny Manziel wore that day, and to make it even worse a big chunk of it is now delivered by news bunnies. no matter how many times i try, i can't bear more than a couple of minutes of their drivel.

NFL Network, go fuck your mama!

    special networks suck
It's only a matter of time before all these specialized networks go away. NFL, Big Ten, Longhorn, MLB, NBA, etc. Nobody actually watches these channels except on the few days that they actually have live sports. Eventually, cable companies will be forced to offer an 'al a carte' programming package and I'm surely not paying for the MLB network. NFL network is probably the only one that even stands a chance of continuing far into the future. In the meantime, I'll just stream the crap for free when they actually have a game and even then I might not watch.

    there is no spoon
ahhhh, the fantasy of al a carte. if we really had choice in the marketplace, we would have options. the fact is, though, that our only "options" for tv are between a handful of megacorps that all have their own sweetheart deals with channels (most of the stations, in turn, are owned by 4 or 5 other megacorps). turn on directtv at 7am and you'll find nearly 40% of all channels are infomercials! you think we CHOOSE that as consumers? i don't spend $100/month for 40% infomercial saturation. "the market has chosen."? i think NOT.

there will never be al a carte with the main television providers. our only hope for "choice" will be internet streaming someday, but with net neutrality now gone (thanks to another megacorp cocksucker - Verizon) who knows when the clamps will be applied to that, too. it's only a matter of time.

there is no free market. the very idea of it is merely an echo of times past, when anyone could put up a shingle on main street and make a modest living. those days are long dead. we witness a lack of real consumer choice all around us, every day, in nearly every aspect of our lives and it's about time for everyone to wake up and admit it.

    one can dream anyway
probably right there, streaming will be the initial al a carte, which it is already really. cable companies are seeing great declines in subscrptions. more and more people are 'cutting the cord' especially with free wifi available in many more places.
