Rules Proposal 26.3: Franchise Declaration Deadline
I'm officially proposing that we move our Franchise Declaration date back by one week. I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks and wish that I had brought it up sooner.
The reason for this proposal is because the NFL has reduced their preseason schedule to essentially just three games instead of four. In the distant past, we would have already gotten a couple of preseason weeks behind us before declaring our players. Now, we'll just have the first preseason game and then have to make our decisions.
Our prime directive for all rules construction is to provide a structure where we can have the most competitive league possible. That's why we have a Franchise Declaration date to begin with, as opposed to declaring it right before the draft. That's why we moved our original date from July to August. That's why we created the Jamaal Lewis Rule. That's why we have a 15 minute clock during the draft (with available clock extensions).
But with the NFL reducing the preseason and so many possible holdouts and injury situations in play, we really should have a clearer view of the real landscape before making these incredibly important and binding decisions.
Even though we are all incredibly excited for the big declaration day, I don't think waiting until August 22nd will have any downside whatsoever and it will really contribute towards us fielding the most competitive teams. It will also significantly reduce the possible application of the dreaded Jamaal Lewis rule, which is something that none of us want to see happen. And we'll all still have over two weeks to prepare for our draft with definitive knowledge.
Please feel free to share your thoughts in the forum. If anyone is against this idea, please offer reasoned counter-arguments that go beyond "just because" or "I want Christmas to come early." Thanks!

I'm fine with this

I think it's a good move. There's a lot of high profile injuries and hold outs right now that could severely impact what an owner chooses for a keeper. Just from my perspective, being in the Bruins spot with JT asking for a trade, he could end up somewhere or holding out. Giving that extra week so if he does get traded in that time Bruins can make that decision then feels more fair in my book. Plus I already know what y'all are keeping according to my predictions I submitted. |

I’m good with this.

And was a little sheepish about asking because the Jamal rule doesn’t acknowledge holdouts or shitty owners. But it seems this may be the new normal moving forward. If players choose to sit out an entire year, it could be devastating and impact one’s draft in monumental ways. |

One thing to say about this...
The NFL didn't delay the beginning of the preseason by 1 week, they eliminated the last week of the preseason. We have always revealed our franchise declarations after week 1 of the preseason. There were even a few seasons where some teams played their first preseason game until after our declarations were made. That being said, I still have no problem with moving our declaration date back one week. |

Very good decision.

Speaking as someone who has a key candidate holding out ATM, I would welcome an extra week to see that situation resolve. |

Keith has earned the benefit of the doubt so I'm good, but I wonder if any clarity will come with an extra week

For injuries, holdouts, or other uncertainties plaguing Ragnarok decision-making, I don't expect that an extra week will add any clarity. So much of this stuff goes til the last minute in the NFL. Personally, I'd rather everyone dclare early and know that a few teams might make a last-minute and totally reasonable change than have us all wait a week on the hopes we learn something new 3 weeks before kickoff instead of 4 weeks before kickoff - and even then have a few team make a last-minute and totally reasonable change. But most of all, I roll with Keith. If we move it a week, it will be all good. |

We only get to do this once a year…
We all invest time and money, and to be hamstrung for the year before we get to draft is ridiculous. This year is the first in many that I have a top 12 player in the draft. It has made my prep so much more fun than “how do I get a top 12 guy for next year.” And still win this year. In 2018 my rookie keeper was cut? That year, I started without a good keeper, a later round pick was burned, and I had to overpick a player to make sure I had a starter. It would be nice to have collateral damage be adjusted, somehow. I would like to note that, although, some have called this “cheating “ I don’t see how it is, my team is , finally, good for the year, so-far. Zach, Dat, Kent, andJeremy(due to Burrow) have hard calls to make that are out of their hands. |
