Rules Proposal 24.3: Jamal Lewis Rule Deadline

It is proposed that we ammend the current Jamal Lewis Rule to install a deadline in order to allow for all teams to have a reasonable understanding of the landscape well before the actual Draft begins. We have allowed the last minute use of the Jamal Lewis Rule and that scenario only grants an advantage to the team which is using that rule.
The original intention of the Jamal Lewis Rule was to address a franchise player suffering a season risking injury in the preseason, so that we would have competitive teams for the regular season. Then we moved the franchise player deadline from July 15 to August 1 to August 15, in part to narrow the window where such a rule would need to be applied.
Then we informally expanded it to include players with contract disputes. And then we informally allowed such scenarios to be decided literally minutes before the Draft begins.
It is of my opinion that the deadline for applying the Jamal Lewis Rule be 24 hours after the last preseason game ends. This would be the Sunday before Draft weekend, which is five days before our Draft. This deadline would exist for both injuries and contract disputes. |
