Rules Proposal 23.7: Trading Deadline
Looking through the official league rules, I didn't see any formal definition for roster lockdowns. And looking at past seasons' trade deadlines, we've been setting the trade deadline to the end of Week 12. Free agency's deadline has always been Week 13, after which complete roster lockdown takes effect.
One thing that I have been a little concerned about in recent years is the notion that a last minute blockbuster trade will greatly affect the playoffs. It seems to me that we all spend a considerable amount of time and effort for months on end, from preparation throughout the summer to doing a huge draft weekend to playing three months of regular season fantasy football.
With this in mind, the idea of having the competitive landscape greatly swing due to a last minute trade runs counter to all of the structure that has been installed in order to support an equitable environment.
The NFL and all other real life sports leagues have trading deadlines which are in the middle of their regular season (NFL is Week 8), and they do this because of exactly the reasons that I mentioned above. No one wants to see a big trade at the end of the regular season because it undermines the very purpose of playing an entire season.
Therefore, I'm proposing that we push our Trade Deadline to two weeks earlier than it currently is. Week 10 would be the last week where a trade could take place. |

This is a very good proposal in a lot of ways

After Keith posted this proposal, I spoke with him on the phone about how we had a trade deadline in my old Yahoo league that was always around this same time or even a week sooner. Along with eliminating last minute trades, I think that moving the trade deadline for Ragnarok back to week 10 would help greatly with a couple of other issues.
1) There would negate the proposal for having two different trade marketplaces. 2) Fire sales would basically be eliminated.

23.7: Trading Deadline is approaching 'likely to pass'
With five YES votes, two NO votes, two NO OPINION votes, and this being a relatively modest rules change, Rules Proposal 23.7: Trading Deadline is close to becoming likely to pass. If anyone would like to change their votes or communicate their thoughts via the forum, now would be the time to do so.
Personally, I think this is a no-brainer for the reasons outlined in the proposal itself.
The only argument against it that I have heard is that teams shouldn't be denied the ability to try to improve their rosters. In my opinion, this is a straw man argument because it ignores the valid reasons for having the rule. Also, teams have all the way through Week 10 to improve their teams through trades and everyone is in the same boat. If you want to get a trade done, everyone knows the deadline and you just need to git er done. |
