I have Andy Reid this year. 10-2. I'm not going to drop Andy for another coach on his bye week (12), and I'm certainly not going to roster two coaches. So I started Reid on his bye. However, if I could start my QB #2 (Goff)... I mean, that doesn't seem like a fair, or a balanced choice. I know the FLEX option isn't really on the table. Just reading the link thread. I know Coaches is a nuanced attribute for our league.
So, what is the official proposal? |

At first, I liked the idea of requiring a head coach in order to be eligible for a Tie and Tie Breaker (assuming that the other team has a coach). This idea has the appearance of making coaches more relevant, fun, interesting, etc.
However, after some reflection I think adjusting our current approach could be counter productive. Zach brought up the strongest argument against it, where you have a great coach and aren't streaming coaches. Should a team really be forced to cut a skill position player just to be eligible for a tie? I think that may be a bridge too far.
Every team makes a calculated risk when dealing with coaches and bye weeks, and they can suffer the consequences if they take coaches too lightly or if they want to risk a bye week. We have a glorious caveman scoring system that has average scores in the 60's, which makes that 1pt more relevant than typical fantasy leagues where the average score is 150 points. How many games has each of us been in this year where we are watching the Head Coach situation in our matchups? Lots!
I take coaches so seriously that on opening Sunday 9/9/18 I realized that I had drafted Doug Pederson like an idiot. Not because he's an Eagle, but because he already played on the opening Thursday game. So in the 12pm free agency, I dropped Pederson and picked up Vance Joseph. I ended up winning my game 75-74 because of this move - if I had let Pederson be my coach in Week 1, I would have lost the game 74-74 on the coach tiebreaker.
So it's up to everyone to decide how much respect they give their coaches, and how they want to approach bye weeks and their coach. Or even rostering coaches at all (there is no rule requiring any positions after the draft is completed). But if one takes coaches too lightly under our current system, it will catch up with you. |
