    2018 Draft Order
Another rule that we should address now is that of how we want to determine the draft order each season. Should it be random each year? Or should it be based on the 2017 final standings and be inverted (worst team picks first)?

If we do it based on final 2017 standings, we should consider some mechanism to prevent sandbagging. Even if it's as simple as a lottery among the six non-playoff teams (the 12th place team gets six ping pong balls, while the 7th place team gets 1 ping pong ball).

Please chime in with any opinions or ideas about how we want to determine the draft order each season, thanks!

    Draft Order
An idea I like is to incorporate another contest in the off season to determine the draft order. So just for example doesn't have to be this but we could take the 2017 standings in reverse order and then use those rankings to pick teams each owner thinks will win March Madness. Then depending on how far each team picked went in the tournament we could have a point system. At the end of the tourney the team with the most points would get to pick their draft order and down the line. I like picking draft order because pick #1 isn't always the most favorable for last place... Just an idea. Could do NBA playoffs or another sport in the off season.

    Draft Order
I like the March Madness idea. If it's decided draft order won't be based on season performance, the NCAA tourney is probably the next best way to do it.

I also prefer whomever wins gets the option of picking their draft order, and then the next picks which number they want to pick, etc.

Another idea. If we do decide season performance decides draft order, how about a consolation playoff for teams that won't make the playoffs? Then whomever wins gets the 1st pick (in draft order). This gives teams missing the playoffs something to play for while the 'real' playoffs are going on.

    I totally agree
about the consolation tourney. Because the way my season is going i am going to need something to keep me busy in December.

however we decide the draft order...
... we'll definitely be having the approach of "pick your own draft slot." for example, if you have the #1 pick in the 2018 draft then you actually have first choice of where you want to be in the draft order. this is especially meaningful for those middle picks, where you may have a slot like #6 but would rather move down to #11. since you earned that better draft position, you have the right of picking your actual slot from whatever slots are still open.

our website actually has built in support for this feature and we use it in the Ragnarok league each season. there is a private form that each team fills out and then on a scheduled date everyone's slot pick selection is revealed at the same time. it's a big fun day when we reveal everyone's chosen draft order in July.

oh, and we'll also do a "loser" playoffs for the six teams that missed the playoffs. we can decide if it will have relevance to the 2018 draft order or not, but at the very least there will be pride on the line. and perhaps copious amounts of side betting.

    2018 Draft Order rules
The playoffs are here and it's time to nail down how/if the 2017 season would affect the 2018 draft.

The specific discussion started in the summer and has had a dedicated thread in the forum since the beginning of November and everyone has had an opportunity to chime in. It seems that a consensus idea is that we would be playing for the CHOICE of draft position and not be locked into specific draft slots. This idea is sophisticated and respectful of the fact that the #6 pick is often not as advantageous as a #10 or #12 pick, for example (it's different each year). This way, we're granting a realizable prize to the one who earned the #6 slot. If they want to drop to #12 because they like the turn and getting 2 of the top 13 players, then they earned it (assuming no one above them already chose #12). This website already supports this system through the use of blind forms that are simultaneously revealed when a deadline is reached.

Soooo, Pick Your Own Draft Slot is officially proposed. Assuming that is agreeable to everyone, now the more nuanced decision is how the 1-to-12 picking order is determined.

While having an outside activity like the NCAA basketball tournament or Nascar or an online Mortal Kombat tournament does sound like a real hoot, figuring out a nexus point for all of us to agree upon may be a bit challenging. Instead, I'm proposing that we base it on the 2017 8Bit football season.

If that would be the case, then it seems to me that it's really about how the #1 pick gets determined. If it goes to the 12th place team, then we may be encouraging sandbagging. If it goes to whoever wins the loser playoffs, though, then we are supporting competitiveness even in the loser playoffs.

Soooo, I'm officially proposing that we have the loser playoff results determine Picks 1-6. Loser Champion gets the #1 pick (your draft slot). Picks 7-12 would be the reversed order for the winner playoff bracket (Champion gets #12, worst "winner" gets #7 pick).

If anyone has any thoughts or objections to the proposed rules affecting how we do the 2018 draft, now is the time to chime in. We'll make some official Official decisions in the next couple of days. Thanks!

    It's official: 2018 Draft Order
    * Winner of the losers bracket gets the #1 pick. Picks #2-6 are based on the rest of the results for the lowers bracket.

    * Picks 7-12 are determined by by the winners bracket, in reverse order. The champion will get the #12 pick, and picks #7-11 are also determined by the results in the winners bracket.

    * This picking order is then used to let owners choose their own draft slots next year. For example, if you have the #5 choice but would like to move down the draft order, you could select draft order position #10 for yourself (assuming it wasn't already taken by someone above you in the picking order).

    * The official Draft Order will be revealed on August 1, 2018. There will be website forms that everyone submits in secret, and then when that date arrives then all selections will be revealed simultaneously.
