    2009 Free Agency Proposal
Ahh, continued refinement of the best damn league. ever....

For 2009 and beyond, it is proposed that we modify our current Free Agency schedule as follows:

    1. Maintain the first FA session on Wednesday nights at 8pm.

    2. Have a second FA session on Sunday mornings at 10am.

    3. Between 10am and 1pm, FA is totally open and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. 1MB will still be the minimum cost to pick up a free agent.

This system will ensure that all teams will be able to field a full slate of starters, even if they get outbid for players in their two opportunities to outbid other owners. This way, teams can at least be guaranteed to fill slots with scrub players and be as competitive as possible.

For weeks that have Thursday and/or Saturday games, the second FA session would be moved up to 3 hours before the first kickoff. Once that is resolved, it would go to a first-come, first-serve system for the three hours leading up to the kickoff.

I like the second open-FA idea. It should help with last minute injuries and with filling in coaches and DF's and such.

New FA doesn't appeal to me on first pass
I feel like adding all these new FA options is, as America's savior Barack Obama would say, using a hatchet when you need a scalpal. There seem to be so few times when teams need a second FA period, let alone an FA open house. I think that fielding a full lineup is something that a competent owner can do without assistance with very few exceptions. There is always the possibility of trade if FA doesn't work out.
In the end, this new FA stuff sounds like a chance for savvy owners to pick up some last-minute steals. Given the fact that alot of guys in the league have kids or other obligations, and the problem this new FA method tries to solve is so rare, I see this more as a possible negative than a certain positive, and as such think that the system ain't broke enough for this fix.

Agreed--this family man isn't in favor of the new FA proposal
I see the reason behind it, but agree (reluctantly) with Jeremy. I find the current FA process to be one of the great unique things about this league--there is some luck and some skill involved with ensuring that you are picking up quality free agents and able to field a full lineup each week. If you're having trouble doing this, tough shit--get better.

With more of us succumbing to fatherhood, I'll speak for myself that Sunday mornings are not exactly a time I'm consistently available, and the great thing about the current bidding system is that it gives everyone an equal shot--something a second free agency period, and particularly an open first-come first-serve period--does not do. I don't think someone should be rewarded largely b/c they're able to get to a computer more than someone else.

If the league feels differently, I'd at least suggest a compromise that the second FA period be added, but that there be no open period. But let the record show that I vote against this rule, and I'm not afraid to reach across party lines to do it. I'm a fucking maverick.

    Third Daddy agrees
Sunday morning? I barely get to watch games. Ditto with what those other fellows wrote. If you aren't gonna pick up a def or coach on Wed, you might lose by one or two, or it may not matter. I still like the worse record wins in a tie for someone though.

I'm selling water pills if anyone wants any. Can also arrange a guy to spit drinks on girls in bars that won't go out with you.

    i think the
the proposal doesn't give any real or substantive advantages to people that are "less busy" than the Daddies. hell, i'm in church all Sunday morning... Jesus is my family time.

instead, the only time for teams to be able to participate in the referred free-for-all time period is after two full-on bidding sessions have been completed for that week. it is only after everyone goes through these simultaneous and competitive bidding sessions that a final and short "catchall" window would open. and even then, it's after the FA pool has been picked clean... TWICE. there aren't going to be advantages gained by picking from this pool. instead, it simply guarantees that teams can field full teams.

this is totally different that what some other leagues do, where anyone can pick up free agents in realtime throughout the week. in that system, it is clearly imbalanced towards people that have no life. and are heathens. this is not the case with this proposal.

I understand the motivation, I'm just not buying this rule
i respect the effort to allow teams to fill rosters when something unexpected happens, and do think that a mechanism to protect owners against the unexpected could be a nice addition. i just don't think this is the right tool. it still feels like we'd be making a major change to fix a minor problem. adding two new fa periods open to all owners seems like overkill, and by a wide margin in my mind.

and i'd disagree on keith's point that there is no advantage for owners that are free from 10am-1pm on sunday. i presume that anyone dropped on wednesday evening or sunday morning would be eligible to be picked up at 10am. counting quickly, i found 7 instances this year where players dropped in fa were picked up by another team the very next week. in some cases, those players were insrted as starters. so you can't contend that players dropped in fa are trash - in fact, there's alot of potential in that fa pool. increasing the opportunities to exploit that pool sounds appealing, but puts at a disadvantage those owners who have weekend obligations.

besides, we just got rid of a rule that had a first-come, first-serve style. why would we add another one a week later?

    ps. best damn league. ever...

Change We (Keith) Can Believe In.......
I have no problem with the Sunday FA but ties should go to the bigger loser, not time stamp.
