IDP. Gawd, we all love them so.
In particular, one thing that I like about the Wasted Years' IDP approach is that it is not overpowering the IDP position compared to most other leagues. However, when looking at the free agency pool it seems as though any team can grab any high quality IDP in any given week, and this runs counter to our goal of having a league structure that rewards good managerial skills.
One of the new rules with the reincarnation of this league was that we now require dedicated slots to IDPs, and this was done in order to both a) create offense/defense balance and stop the exploit where teams were having just 3 IDP and 1 coach and using the newly-opened slots for "practice squad / farm players", and b) introduce more emphasis on the IDP.
Here is the new proposal:
"That we adjust the roster definitions to grant additional emphasis to the IDP without imbalancing the scoring system. This would be done by adding three more IDP roster slots to every team, which would reduce the over-abundance of IDP's in the free agency pool as well as incentivize teams to consider keeping IDP's from season to season."
In addition, we should simplify our roster requirements from:
18 Offensive players
2 DL
2 LB
2 DB
2 CO
to:
18 Offensive players
9 Defensive players
2 Coaches
How could we fairly go about this? I think it's pretty easy... We would schedule one special IDP-only Free Agency session. Each team would get 5 Quid added to their bank account, and they can spend as little or as much as they wish on FA.
Please chime in with your thoughts on this idea. If everyone seems to be in favor of it, we'll hold a vote and do a special IDP FA within the next week.

| I really like the Rule 1 proposal, it will definately add to what we are trying to do and take out some of the luck factor in determining who is the best over the long haul. Good job Dan and Keith. As far as the IDP rule, it really doesn't matter to me. I like the goal but am not sure this will achieve it. Since we have so much more emphasis on offensive scoring (which I like), I tend to not really care about my defense. That is to say, I know that every point counts and having a stud D can win you a lot of games and so I will keep my starters up to date, but I was one of those who prefered to reserve as many slots as possible for potential offensive players, even sitting on some dudes for a couple years and just updating my 3 defensive players as needed and preferably in trades. And this seemed to pay off more for me than having 2 IDP's at each position. If I'm forced to have 9 total IDP's (and I do like the regardless of position approach) then I imagine I'll still only focus on my main 3 guys at each of the 3 positions and let the other 6 grow old on my bench, to some degree at least. With only 30 quid per year (which I also like), spending too much to keep a 9 man defensive roster up to date would not be in my plans. I certainly would'nt spend any money on them just to remove players from the pool. The defensive player scoring is so much more fluid than the offensive scoring from week to week and year to year that even with 9 man D rosters I bet we'll be able to pick up some good guys on a regular basis. Unless of course everybody else spends all their quid on those guys, in which case - all the better for me. I'm happy to try it, I just don't think it will accomplish much. Giving D more scoring would accomplish the goals but I don't want to do that, I like the balance we have. Maybe there's another solution or maybe I'm just plain wrong, wouldn't be the first time. |

Well said TV.
I also like Rule 1 a lot and am very indifferent to Rule 2 (I don't really even like IDPs to be honest - If you want to get creative, how about Team DL, Team LB, Team DB and Team ST and have special scoring for each? WHAT?)
Summary: Rule 1 - Good, Rule 2 - Either way.
