    Auction details
    Keith,

Looking through the rules, trying to figure out how this auction works.

300 Quid for 24 players? Or is it something different?

Is the auction held on this site?

How does the bidding work? Do we take turns or is it like a real auction where you type in your bid at any time?

I've never done an auction online, so please spell out everything for us.

    Thanks!!

    Bob

    you are gonna love it
it is a pretty intuitive setup and i think that everyone will do great. here's a summary of some details for our auction:

    * 300 Q to spend on all 24 players, with a 1 Q minimum per slot

    * the auction is in the CustomizedFootball auction room. it has the auction block, the current player pool, your worksheet (if you decide to fill one out), a summary of all teams' banks and per-position signings, a chat room, and the draft/auction board that shows which players are signed to which teams.

    * it is like a real auction, where you can make a bid in realtime and the system sorts out the datestamps and values of everyone's bids. for example, a player gets nominated with an opening bid and then five teams can respond and bid on the player nearly instantaneously, and then keep bidding at will. everyone will see the current high bid in realtime, along with the clock ticking down.

    * there is a Going Once, Going Twice, Going Three Times, SOLD sequence. anytime a higher bid comes in, it resets to Going Once.

    * generally speaking, the first part of the draft sees alot of competitive bidding and so the first third or so takes a little bit of time as we all try to out-haggle each other. once the blue chip players are mostly taken, the auction speeds up a bit. and by the end of the auction, most teams are filling out positions and can only budget 1 Q or close to it regardless, so it kind of moves along at a draft pace.

    * there is an optional auction worksheet that you can fill out before and/or during the auction. this can be a handy reference, and if you turn it On then it also has the capability of filling in for you in that it will make bids on players you listed (up to the max that you defined) and it will also nominate players for the auction block in case of your absence.

i think that covers the nuts and bolts. now, how about some basic auction strategies to consider?

    * figure out a budget ahead of time. usually, i'll go with a per-position breakdown, such as, "i'm going to spend X% of my money on QB's, Y% on RB's, etc. and/or i may say that i'm going to spend Z% of my budget on the starting 6 skill players (1QB, 2RB, 3WR). you can look at the nfl talent pool to see where you feel that investing in players will give you an advantage over your competition. look at some mock auction results that are posted on the internets, and you can probably find out what the players' market values are.

keep in mind that most auctions use $100, have different number of roster sizes, positions, etc., so you have to do a conversion in order to translate. for example, if in the posted mock auctions you see that Steven Jackson is typically going for $30 (i have no idea if this is true), you know that value is 30% of their total budget which equals 90 Quid for our auction. but consider our roster sizes and positions and dynastic considerations, and this may be a little less than a 90 Q conversion.

    * figure out a backup budget or two. oftentimes, you have to change gameplans based on how crazy other people are.

    * selectively, be a douche. try to raise up the prices on players that you want other people to take. be careful, though - you can push it to far and find yourself the proud owner of Ima Succah.

    * douch move #2: nominate a player that you don't want but you think you can get other teams to take. then jack up the price.

    * budget for the end of the auction. after most teams have blown their bankrolls by the middle of the auction, you can get good depth for cheap near the end.

i'm going to set up some mock auction leagues in the next few days, and then we'll probably have a couple of mock realtime auctions shortly. i'll send out some invites when those are ready and the mock dates are defined, and then anyone who wants to get a feel for how the auction works can join up for a simulation.

let me know if you have any questions?
